The Arizona Department of Agriculture, Office of the State Veterinarian has confirmed 4 cases of Equine Herpes Virus (#EHV-1) in Maricopa County. Horse owners are reminded that they should practice good biosecurity at events (do not share tack, feed pans, water buckets, grooming supplies) and limit unnecessary contact with horses that are not your own or familiar to you. At your residence, try to limit any over-the-fence contact between your horses and your neighbors' horses especially if the vaccine status of a horse is not known. Please be advised that all of the EHV cases that we have diagnosed in the state to date have all been of the type that vaccination can protect against. Make sure your horses vaccines are current even if you think your horses don't go anywhere or are not exposed. Disease is a two-way street - you can go to disease or disease can come to you.
