Keeping livestock and other animals healthy is important. In efforts to decrease unnecessary antibiotic usage in animals, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is changing the way animal owners can obtain certain antibiotics. Under an FDA rule called the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD), veterinarians are required to examine and prescribe antibiotics that can be mixed in the feed or added to water to treat illness in the animal or group of animals.
